Saying Yes to God's Call: A Journey of Faith and Obedience

Updated: 5 days ago

Have you ever felt like God was shifting something in your life, but you weren’t not quite sure where it was all heading? That’s exactly where we were not too long ago. We could feel the undeniable sense that God was asking for more from us. And honestly, it was a little scary.

What started with my husband wrestling with a long-standing call to preach turned into something so much bigger than we imagined. One “Yes” to God opened the door to a whole new season, one that’s stretching and pulling us closer to Him every step of the way.

We’re not claiming to have it all figured out. But what we do know is this: when you say “Yes” to God, He takes care of the rest.

Life Lately: A Kingdom Shift

That “Yes” marked the beginning of a new chapter for our family, a Kingdom shift we never could’ve written on our own. In the last few years, we’ve watched God take what felt like quiet obedience and turn it into something far more intentional. He’s been reshaping our hearts and aligning our steps as we prepare for full-time ministry together.

Again, it all started with my husband.

For years, he carried a deep sense that God was calling him to preach and teach His Word. It wasn’t a new feeling; it had been there for a long time. Even though he had been saved for several years, part of him had been running from the weight of that calling. Not because he didn’t love God, but because the responsibility felt heavy. He knew what saying “Yes” would cost.

But God is patient and He’s faithful to keep pursuing us. Over time, through prayer, confirmation, and undeniable nudges from the Holy Spirit, my husband surrendered. Fully. No more running. No more delays. He said “Yes” to the call, and from there, everything started to shift.

When he said “Yes,” it didn’t just change his life; it changed all of ours.

That decision wasn’t something he carried alone. As his wife, I knew that if God was calling him into full-time ministry, He was calling us too. So, after prayer and a lot of honest conversations, we chose to say “Yes” together.

And I have to say, outside of our salvation and our marriage, it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

It wasn’t long before doors started opening that we never could’ve opened on our own. We felt God’s hand guiding us, clearing paths we hadn’t even seen before. One of the clearest signs of His direction came when we were introduced to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College.

At first, we thought it was just a passing conversation, a connection my husband made while playing basketball with a friend. But God was already working behind the scenes. What seemed casual at first quickly turned into confirmation. It was as if every detail had been divinely orchestrated.

We knew this wasn’t something we could ignore. Saying “No” would’ve meant stepping out of alignment with what God was clearly doing. So we moved forward with peace in our hearts and faith in His plan.

From the outside, it might have looked like this was his journey, but in reality, God was moving in both of us.

While my husband was stepping into his calling, I found myself wrestling with questions and concerns of my own. What does it even mean to be a minister’s wife? How could I support my husband in ministry when I didn’t feel fully equipped myself? I hadn’t been discipled in the traditional sense, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t feel ready.

I ran to my prayer closet, seeking answers. What happened next marked a pivotal point in my journey.

I asked God to show me how to walk this out, not just for him, but for our family. And in that quiet place of prayer, God gently nudged me to look deeper into what my husband was stepping into. I found myself on the seminary’s website, not really sure what I was looking for, just following the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

That’s when I came across a welcome video from the president of NOBTS. I clicked it, and as I listened, something in me stirred. His words felt personal, like God was using them to speak directly to my heart. Through further research, I found something I wasn’t expecting: the president’s wife started a program to prepare ministers’ wives for their role in ministry.

I sat up a little straighter. “Okay, Lord. I’m listening.”

As I dug deeper, I was amazed to find that not only was I eligible to attend this program, but the classes were also offered free of charge, thanks to the generosity of women who had walked this road before me. The classes meet in the evening once a week with free childcare included. That may seem small, but in our season of life, that detail felt like a love note from God.

I spoke to my husband immediately about joining the program, knowing deep down that this was God’s way of preparing me, too.

God had gone before me, not just in the logistics, but in the emotional and spiritual preparation. He was answering very specific prayers. That first class wasn’t just informational; it was transformational. I left feeling seen, supported, and more confident in the role God was calling me into.

That’s when it sank in: our journey has officially begun.

The Power of Being on One Accord

One of the most powerful things I’ve learned through all of this is the beauty of being on one accord, not just in marriage, but in ministry.

When we both said “Yes,” we stepped into something bigger than ourselves. We weren’t just agreeing to support each other from a distance; we were walking side by side, both surrendered, both serving, both committed to whatever God had next.

The book of Acts describes the early church as being of “one heart and mind” (Acts 4:32). That unity gave them strength, boldness, and clarity. And I’m learning that the same is true in our home.

We’re not perfect. There are still fears, questions, and plenty of growth ahead. But there’s also peace, because we know we’re walking in obedience, together.

Struggling to Say “Yes”?

If you’re in a season where you feel the tug of God’s calling, but fear, uncertainty, or inadequacy is holding you back, I want to encourage you. You don’t have to have it all figured out to follow Him.

Saying “Yes” doesn’t mean you won’t wrestle with doubt. It doesn’t mean you won’t ask, “Am I really cut out for this?” Some days, I still ask that question.

But what I’ve learned is that God isn’t asking for perfection; He’s asking for willingness. A heart that says, “Lord, I don’t know what this will look like, but I trust You more than I trust my fears.”

He’s faithful to equip those He calls. He’ll go ahead of you, open the right doors, and place the right people in your life, just like He did for us.

So if you’re on the edge of a Kingdom shift of your own, don’t be afraid to lean in. That tug on your heart might just be the beginning of something beautiful.

I don’t know what your “Yes” will lead to, but I do know this: obedience always brings you closer to the heart of God. He honors your steps, whether big or small.

On the other side of surrender, there’s purpose, peace and the promise that you won’t have to walk this path alone.

A Prayer for the One Who’s Considering Their “Yes”

Lord,

Thank You for being patient with us as we wrestle, wonder, and wait. Thank You for calling us, even when we feel unqualified or unsure.

For the one reading this who feels the nudge but doesn’t know where to begin, I pray You’d quiet the noise around them and speak clearly to their heart. Remind them that You go before them, that You’ve already made provision for every step they’re afraid to take.

Give them the courage to surrender.

Give them peace in the waiting.

Give them wisdom as they walk.

And when the moment comes to say “Yes,” help them to trust that You’ll be faithful to carry them the rest of the way.

Thank You for being the kind of God who calls us, equips us, and walks with us, every step of the way, in every season.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
